CREATE A SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR
Let me start off by saying that "2021" is only a few hours away. Yippee!
Almost everyone I know are running to grab hold of the new year and understandably, we all know why. But before jumping into the new year, please take some time to reflect on all that you've learned and how much growth you have accomplished both on an individual level and as part of a community.
A few of my clients this past week have been in serious contemplation over what their new years resolution should be. They’ve either already started to make changes or have begun compiling their list of those things they would like to change.
Today, I want to stress to you that although change is important and well needed for many, it’s important to look at not just short term outcomes but more consistent and regular lifestyle habits. When you look at making changes to your day to day, be sure that consistency becomes a part of your familiar language.
Many people get excited about all the changes they will make for the new year and put energy for the first few days into making small changes to later crash and throw in the towel. Change is only successful with consistency. You can for example, change your diet for 1 month to find that those 5 pounds may come back even faster if you don’t maintain those healthy eating habits. Immediate results can be pleasing for the initial ego to see however actual progress develops when changes become intertwined with your day to day living. Now I know it’s not easy but it is possible.
We all know that change clearly does not happen overnight however it can and will happen. It's about the effort that you put in. With patience and repetition, you can be much more successful in achieving the outcomes you're seeking. Remember, Rome was not created in a day. It took time for this creation to happen and so will your changes. With regular routine, habit and focus, you’re sure to come out on top!
Here are some tips to keep you focused as you work towards a lifestyle change:
Start with 1 change at a time.
Recognize that small changes do add up.
Remind yourself that you are not looking for a quick fix but rather a consistent and long term life change.
Don’t allow yourself to get stuck thinking about your “to do” list. Instead get up and start moving. “Just do it!”
Change your environment as needed to support the new habits you’re seeking to create.
Be kind to yourself and praise your efforts every step of the way.
Find yourself an accountability partner to support you along the way: You can keep a journal, check in with a friend or hire a coach.
Change is not about seeing a one time outcome. It’s about living a long term process.
